Tiivistelmä
Tapaustutkimuksellinen opinnäytetyö käsittelee liikkeen tilallisten muotojen materialisoimisen käsitteistöä lähtökohtana tutkivalle konsertille, jossa musiikillinen improvisaatio on keskiössä tutkimuksen kohteena. Valerie Preston-Dunlop on kehittänyt teorian tilallisten muotojen materialisoimisesta esittävässä taiteessa.
This thesis is a case study of an artistic experimental concert that uses multidisciplinary methods as a starting point for musical improvisation. Valerie Preston-Dunlop has developed a theory of materialising spatial forms in performing arts called Choreutic Unit and Manner of Materialisation. The purpose was to integrate this frame of reference from dance science into musical practice and search what impact this merger of these two art fields can bring to musical improvisation and interpretation. The purpose of the thesis was to discover new ways to practice musical improvisation and to try out a new multidisciplinary perspective for my own artistic agency. The research question of my thesis was what new aspects can a theory of choreutic unit and manner of materialisation bring to observing and implementing my own musical improvisation?
In this thesis, I aim at introducing different kinds of definitions of improvisation and other phenomena, methods and artists that benefit from movement or perceiving visual forms for supporting their playing or improvisation. I speculate on the meaning of the performer in the artistic performance. I open a discussion on the present changes in music education as the role of a musician has become more communicative in the society and how traditional classical music concert conventions could be transformed. I introduce a few concepts of Preston-Dunlop ́s theory of choreutic unit and manner of materialisation, describing the rehearsal process of the concert and the concert itself based on the method. The concert took place on 22.2.2020 at Sotku theater in Kuopio, and the work group consisted of 3 musicians including myself and one light–sound engineer.
The results that I discovered after my experimental concert was that improvisation was, first, rendered possible, and then, I also discovered an increase in my self-confidence. Trust in my own artistic work improved and through multidisciplinary perspective, the creative thoughts empowered. The physical movement, playing or materializing the forms and shapes out, new spatial thinking, diminishing of stage freight and acceptance of the played material resulted in a better musical quality. I hope that this thesis inspires others, especially classical musicians and teachers, to improvise.
