The thesis was carried out in co-operation with Helsinki Business College. The aim of the thesis was to produce fresh information about the financial management skills of first-year students after primary school studying vocational qualification in business, and web developing.
The purpose of this thesis was to research young people's financial management skills. The purpose was also to explore the potential of The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland as a source of financial literacy skills for young people, combining special expertise in the fields of diaconia and church youth work.
An electronic questionnaire was produced for data collection in co-operation with the school. The research also included holding survey groups at the school. The survey was conducted in the autumn of 2019 at Helsinki Business College. The survey population was based on the response rates of young people born in 2002 and 2003. Based on this data, the results were analysed.
The results of the study showed that there are a number of young people who are familiar with the concepts and practices of economics and some of them are already financially responsible. Young people had an interest and desire to learn economic skills. Budgeting, saving habits and attitudes to default marking shared the most opinions. Young people talk about money, preferably with their loved ones, and they are also the ones they turn to if faced with financial problems.
