The objective of the thesis was to study gendered attributes in commercial jewellery design in Finnish cultural context. The subject was approached by studying written sources to learn about gender roles and stereotypes as a phenomenon, and how they affect design in general. Based on acquired knowledge, an analysis of pictorial sources was carried out. The objective of the analysis was to define materials, colours, gemstones and settings, and attributes of form that are typical to women’s and men’s jewellery.
The findings show that there are clearly gendered attributes in design, and that this also applies to jewellery design. These attributes were noticed to repeat traditional gender roles and stereotypes.
Based on the results, a conceptual framework for the design process was created. It was decided that the themes would be modern gender narratives in women’s and men’s jewellery, and animals. Two pieces of jewellery were designed to meet the requirements that were defined based on the former study.
The products were made using 3D modelling and printing, and casting techniques, and then hand-finished.
