In this thesis the author studied co-working spaces and provided research for the business community Crazy Town on their spaces and how they are used. The focus was especially on how the spaces contribute to well-being, creativity and face-to-face encounters of their users.
Co-working spaces were born due to the transformation in the way people work. They are much more than office spaces as for their membership fee, they offer added value and the benefits of a community. Co-working spaces have been popular especially among freelancers and start-ups. Traditionally, co-working spaces are communal activity based offices. They are designed according to the needs and activities of their users. Typically, there are quiet areas, areas for teamwork as well as space that encourages encounters and interaction.
In a co-working space, the relaxed and communal atmosphere as well as joint events improve the well-being of its users. In addition, utilizing the space in varied ways encourages spontaneous encounters. Those interactions inspire creativity and innovation, which are at the core of operations in co-working spaces. For the present study, the author conducted a survey where the members of the business community Crazy Town were asked about their use of the space as well as their wishes for it. In addition, the author observed how the space were used. The findings were instrumental in designing new spaces as well as improving the existing ones. During the making of this thesis, the author was involved in designing Crazy Town co-working spaces in three separate locations in Jyväskylä, Tampere and Hämeenlinna.
