The purpose of this thesis was to examine how does youth feel about moving in to a Child Welfare Department. The aim was to get the youth to tell about the placement, moving into a small group home, and the adaptation into a new environment. The purpose was to get tips from the current residents of the small group home for those children who will move in later. Thesis also wanted to give information for employees of how a new child should be welcomed, and what are the things that should be taken into consideration in that situation.
This thesis was conducted as a qualitative research, and the data was collected by using theme interview with six residents, three from each small group home named Aapeluskoti. One of the interviewee turned 18 years during the research, but the other five interviewees were between 13 and 17 years of age.
The child with the longest placement had been in the Aapeluskoti for seven years, and the one with the shortest placement had been in a small group home for two years at the time of the interviews. The interviews were conducted individually as a face to face session. The interviews were recorded and transcriped afterwards. The data was analysed thematically. The theoretical part consists of introduction to the process of a child taken into custody, the child's position in that process, the introduction of a Child Welfare Department as a foster care placement, and the children’s well-being in the process of moving in to a small group home.
Results indicate that the placement of a child is a life-changing event for them, and understanding the reasons can take many years. It is very important to talk about it by taking into consideration the child's age and mental development. To adapt into a new environment was a challenge but also possibility to find new hobbies and friends. The most important advice for children and youth moving in the small group home was to try to comply with the rules so that the cooperation between workers and residents would be as easy as possible and meaningful for
both of them.
