Tiivistelmä
Perinteisten sanomalehtien ansaintamalli on muuttunut viime vuosikymmenen aikana mainosvetoisesta tilausvetoiseksi, mikä tarkoittaa, että yhä suurempi osa lehdistön kokonaistuotoista tulee mainosten sijaan tilauksista.
The way traditional newspapers earn their income has changed during the last century or so. In the 1980s newspapers got most of their income from the ads placed on the papers bu nowadays more than half of their income comes from subscriptions. This is due to the growth of the Internet, because of which the revenue spent on online advertisement has increased and the revenue spent on print advertisement has instead declined. The growth of the Internet has also shattered the traditional media sphere into smaller niches. As a result the traditional media, such as newspapers, now have to compete of readers’ attention and time with other media outlets, such as social media.
Because of the development described above many of the newspapers in Finland have transferred into “digital first” type of business model and have started to put more time and effort into creating digital platforms of their own.
This has been the direction in Etelä-Suomen Sanomat, a regional newspaper published in the Lahti region, as well. I did my thesis for the online department of the said newspaper, and my task was to map out what the readers of its web platform think about its content and what kind of ideas they have for developing it in the future. In order to do so I carried out an online survey in April 2018, which got 1566 answers in less than two weeks.
One thing was clear from the answers of the survey: the readers want to consume more local content above anything else. Also many of the answers deal with the main tasks of journalism journalists follow in their every-day work. Instead of demanding more content from specific areas of interests, such as stories of local entrepreneurs, readers highlight that they want to consume content that is un-biased, has its facts straight and is written in good and impeccable Finnish. Instead of entertainment news readers wish more actual news content, such as deep analysis.
All in all, the readers demand content that touches on local matters and is well written. In the future Etelä-Suomen Sanomat should invest in its role as a regional newspaper and stay focused on the local matters. Nationwide news can be read from other media outlets, but the regional news cannot. It is the job of Etelä Suomen Sanomat to deliver those news to its readers.
