The work for this thesis was conducted at the Nestlé factory in Turku, Finland. This thesis aims to locate and investigate the product waste created during the production process. The factory prepares ready-to-eat baby food products such as Piltti, Bona and Gerber. In the factory, it was noticed that the amount of product waste was different in four different kettles, although the final product weights in the kettles were stable. The thesis was done as a project commission in the factory.
Both international and factory demands were considered during the project. The valves and pumps included in the process activity were approached by studying the process flow. The automation settings were scrutinised for better overview of the active process.
The objective of the thesis was to investigate the production process to locate the source of the process waste. The foremost cause of waste was determined and found to be the waste drainage parameters for each kettle. The waste drainage parameters were programmed according to the longest process route. Other kettles had shorter routes which meant they suffered superfluous waste. A plan was created for waste reduction by calculating each kettle route and by determining individual drainage durations for each kettle. Suggested new drainage times for each kettle would benefit the client by bringing in savings of approx. 1.6% /production week.
