Vallitsevana teoriana tinaviiksien syntymiselle on pidetty välimetallikerrosteoriaa. Rasitusten ansiosta tinakerrokseen muodostuu nystyröitä, joista tinaviikset alkavat kasvamaan. Tinaviiksien syntymistä voidaan ehkäistä tehokkaasti suunnittelun avulla käyttämällä eri hallintatasoja sovelluskohteen mukaan. The goal of this bachelor’s thesis is to discover the current prevailing understanding of the tin whisker phenomenon and to present ways to prevent the phenomenon through design. The work also shows the effectiveness of lead in preventing tin whiskers. The work is carried out as a literature review of the most researched origin theories and the further studies formed from them.
Tin whiskers are a problem in electronics because they form conductive bridges between the solder and a conductive material, causing short circuits. Tin whiskers grow from the surface of the tin layer in different shapes and lengths, the thinnest and shortest of which burn as they form a path for the current. The metal whisker phenomenon was first observed as a cadmium whisker in electronic circuits during World War II. First preventive measures for the growth of tin whiskers were developed in the 1950s.
Research into the tin whisker phenomenon is still ongoing, and the origin of whiskers cannot be fully explained. The prevailing theory for the formation of tin whiskers has been the intermetallic layer theory. The intermetallic layer is created with the metal base and the tin solder causing internal stresses. Due to stresses the tin layer forms bumps, from which tin whiskers start to grow. The occurrence of tin whiskers can be effectively prevented through planning by using different control levels depending on the application.
