Biowaste is separately collected and composted in factories in order to collect as much nutrients as possible to be recycled. This is done in HSY’s composting plant in Ämmässuo, where part of the biowaste is digested, releasing raw biogas. This is then collected for further processing to bio methanol. The rest of the mass is first composted in factory conditions and then outdoors in windrow composting from 2 to 8 months. This fresh compost is then sold to the soil industry to better improve soil nutrient levels.
This bachelor’s thesis determines the nutrient balance in the biowaste process. The focus is on the sidetracks of wastewater and off-gases, and how much nutrients escape the system via them. The results show that the largest sidetrack for nitrogen is through waste air, which is processed in biofilters before releasing into the atmosphere. For phosphorus, the largest side path is process water. This process water is guided back to the system in later steps, reducing the amount of clean water needed and adding nutrients back to the system.
These calculations did not catch all sidetracks for nutrients. During the outdoor process, there are massive mass reduction as well as nutrient losses. This leads to further research in last-stage losses, as well as better use and collection of nitrogen from off-air.
