Tiivistelmä
Suomen valtio omistaa osuuksia 16:sta eri suomalaisesta pörssiyhtiöstä.
The government of Finland has holdings in sixteen Finnish listed companies. Generally, the meaning of listed companies is to maximize the wealth of their owners or the market price of their stocks. The price of a stock is dependent on many variables, but ownership structure is one of the most significant. Usually, state-owned enterprises are considered less profitable. The goal of this study is to examine how the Finnish state-owned enterprises have performed in the Helsinki stock exchange. The theoretical framework of this study consists of the agent theory, the modern finance theory and previous literature on state-owned enterprises.
In this study, the stock portfolio of the state-owned enterprises is compared to the portfolio of private enterprises and the market index in the period 1.1.2015 - 31.12.2019. In the comparison, there were used risk-adjusted indicators and statistical methods.
As a result of the thesis, there was found that the portfolio of the state-owned enterprises had performed a noticeable better in the review period than the private-owned companies and OMX-Helsinki return index. However, there was not found a statistically significant difference between the performance of the portfolios. The result showed that partially the previous literature on state-owned enterprises is insufficient and can’t be applied to modern state-owned enterprises.
