Sulfur and dust emissions from a modern recovery furnace are very low, when the recovery boiler process is operating significantly better than before. Most of these emissions are coming from the old dissolving tank vent systems not working well or during the upset conditions of the modern systems.
The aim of this master’s thesis is to study the measurements and controls of the dissolving tank vent system of a recovery boiler in the process point of view. The theoretical part describes the processes of the sulphate pulp mill, the odorous gases generated and collection points of these gases. The theoretical part also describes the functions and design of a recovery boiler and the incinerating of the odorous gases in the recovery furnace.
The research part of the thesis is based on the operation experiences and measurement data collected from dissolving tank vent systems. The dissolving tank of a recovery boiler is the hardest place to collect vent gases from a pulp mill. The operation of the recovery furnace is not always stable. In the event of disturbances, the odorous gases are turned away from the incinerating and vented into the surrounding air. It is possible to reduce these disturbances and odorous gas emissions to the environment by adding measurements and controls a lot more than before. New measurements and controls can stop the odorous emissions and improve the density and level control of the green liquor in the dissolving tank. All these factors have a positive impact not only on the environment, but also on the operation of the white liquor plant i.e., positive impact on the complete pulp mill operation.
