Tiivistelmä
The current climate change situation and changing business environments have created a need to develop quickly novel solutions for energy systems and produce carbon-neutral fuels to pursue independence from fossil energy sources. Hydrogen economy solutions, like power-to-x (P2X) technologies, are expected to play a key role to meet these challenges. However, P2X fuel production has not yet met the economic feasibility but it was noted that many studies have considered the P2X feasibility quite a narrow perspective. To meet this deficiency, a three-stage economic and technology emphasized feasibility study (FS) framework was created and the early results indicated that the P2X investments could already be a profitable solution. However, this framework had also its deficiencies, it did not recognize the full potential of P2X investments through sustainability which formed a need for a new extended version of the framework. The objective of the thesis is to expand the FS framework into a new sustainable feasibility study (SFS) framework to support the P2X investment projects. As a result, a new SFS framework is created which considers the capital investment projects’ feasibility beyond the economic perspective by adding all three dimensions of sustainability: economic, environmental, and social. The framework consists of three stages: ecosystem profiling, business model description and profitability modelling. The thesis was constructed by utilizing the design science research (DSR) methodology, literature review and LUT University’s earlier research on P2X feasibility. Nykyinen ilmastonmuutostilanne ja muuttuneet liiketoimintaympäristöt ovat luoneet tarpeen kehittää nopeasti uusia ratkaisuja energiajärjestelmiin ja tuottaa hiilineutraaleja polttoaineita, jotta päästäisiin riippumattomuuteen fossiilisista energialähteistä. Vetytalouden ratkaisujen, kuten Power-to-X (P2X) teknologian, odotetaan olevan avainasemassa näihin haasteisiin vastatessa.
