Lontoon pörssi on toiminut melko tehokkaasti. This bachelor’s thesis examines how the approval of the coronavirus vaccine has affected stock exchanges in emerging and developed markets. The reaction is being examined on the British and Russian stock exchanges. The events under review are the approval of the Pfizer vaccine in the United Kingdom on December 2nd of 2020 and the registration of the Sputnik- V vaccine in Russia on August 11th of 2020.
The aim of this bachelor's thesis was to investigate the reactions of the London Stock Exchange and the Moscow Stock Exchange to the approval of the official coronavirus vaccine. Using the research method, the average abnormal return and the average cumulative abnormal returns for event day and event window were calculated for the shares of the ten largest companies in the target market areas. The statistical significance of the results was tested, after which the results were analyzed.
Based on the results of the literature review, there have been differences in the market reaction in emerging and developed markets. The case study also shows that there have been differences between the London and Moscow stock exchanges, as market reactions to the stock exchanges under review were different. The London Stock Exchange has been quite efficient. In contrast, the efficient market hypothesis on the Moscow Stock Exchange did not fully actualize. In addition, the approval of the vaccine on the event day caused an average abnormal return of -1.30% on the Moscow Stock Exchange.
