Abstract
Examines G.M. Hopkins's early poem 'The Escorial' through Ahlbäck's concept of the 'imaginature'. Approaching Hopkins through perspectives furnished by his admirer, George Orwell, this reading engages with the former's juvenile reading of Spanish history, interest in the composition of conpetition poetry, and eventual conversion to Catholicism: opening up, en route, new insights into the poet's early production.
