The digitization of work and the use of complex information systems have increased in many organizations. While they are likely to reduce jobs in various sectors, they will also have an impact on employment growth. The development of the systems will create a demand for experts in robotics, machine learning and network security. However, future changes will require user confidence and trust in these systems.
The aim of the study was to find out the effect of technology on the building of employees' trust in the organization, the employer and the service provider. The research is limited to an organization that has decided to replace a business process with artificial intelligence (AI) or robotics (RPA). The study used a thematic interview in which nine different individuals from different levels of the organization were interviewed.
The study showed that the interviewees had varying experiences and views on artificial intelligence. A common factor was the benefit of artificial intelligence in routines as well as in predicting patient needs. However, artificial intelligence should not be given too much power and should be based on researched information. Confidence in oneself, colleagues and the process was felt to be important. In the organization, trust in subordinates, supervisors and colleagues was considered important. A unified view of working for the patient was also important. Transparency, informativeness and reliability were seen as the most important characteristics for the trust of supervisors. The ability to see behind ideas and a unified operating culture were felt to be important. The trust of the service provider is affected by the fact that the service contains the agreed things and that it will be completed within the agreed time. It was also felt important to know what the service was done for and who did it.
The biggest issue related to trust was information and mainly its lack. Looking to the future, when planning artificial intelligence projects, it is important to ensure open communication and the widest possible involvement of staff.
