The purpose of the work was to get acquainted with the dissimilar welding of lean duplex stainless steel and non-alloy steel. Moreover, welding experiments were carried out in order to research how above-mentioned dissimilar weld joint could be successfully produced by fulfilling the mechanical and metallurgical requirements set for the weld joint. The work included a theoretical part and an experimental part. The theoretical part dealt with the theory of dissimilar weld joints, base materials, filler materials, and presented the Schaeffler diagram and its use in evaluating dissimilar weld joints. In the experimental part, LDX 2101 lean duplex stainless steel and S355 structural steel were robotic MAG welded using partial chamfered V-groove (60o and 30o) butt-joints and Autorod 309MoL and Autorod 312 filler wires. The welded parts were subjected to tensile tests, hardness measurement, ferrite measurement, and micro- and macro-scopic imaging. In the tensile tests, the weld joint speciemens had the required strength because they all broke as expected on the unalloyed steel side. Elevated hardness values were observed only on the surface side in test
speciemens which were welded using 60° groove angles. Elevated hardness spikes in above-mentioned joints were on the side of S355 base material, where they were located at the weld metal adjacent to fusion line. Hard areas could not be interpreted as martensitic, but locally refined grain size could contribute to an increase in hardness. In addition, the presence of hard areas at only 60° groove angles is likely to be related to the mixing of base and filler metal, but further studies would be needed to obtain conclusive results. The structure of the weld was evaluated with a Schaeffler diagram, which proved to be at least an indicative measure, although the ferrite content values differed between those obtained from the diagram and those measured on the test specimens.
