The spread of invasive aquatic species is increasing, and thus the risk of disturbances in the ecosystems increase. In the Baltic Sea, the introduced omnivorous Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould 1841) can exist in a wide array of environments, such as the sublittoral sandy bottoms with Zostera marina, where it through predation can have various effects on the community. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate, in an aquarium experiment, how the presence of juvenile Platichthys flesus affects the feeding behaviour of R. harrisii, and how these predators affect the shallow sandy sublittoral macrofauna (Macoma balthica and Bathyporeia pilosa). At the same time, the differences in the abundance of R. harrisii on the sandy bottoms with and without Z. marina was studied in Lumparn, the Åland Islands. In the presence of P. flesus, R. harrisii consumed significantly less M. balthica <10 mm compared to when R. harrisii was alone. The reason for this was presumed to be due to the presence and disturbances caused by P. flesus, both on M. balthica and R. harrisii. It was noted that R. harrisii consumed more M. balthica ≥10 mm in the presence of P. flesus, even though the difference was non-significant. The reason for this could have been that R. harrisii tried to reduce its activity when searching for food, and thereby reduce the risk of confrontation with other species that could cause damage or even death. A total of 69 crabs were captured in the studie in Lumparn, where a clear majority were males (72,5 %). There was a significant difference in the number of females between the areas with (41 %) och without (3 %) Z. marina. The differences could have been caused by: 1. mobility differences between the sexes, 2. a habitat preference by females, 3. a large mortality inflicted upon females after egghatching, and 4. differences in activity between the sexes and the time of sampling. In general, the males were of a larger size (carapace max and average width 19,8 mm respective 14,2 mm) than females (carapace max and average width 13,6 mm respective 10,9 mm) in the whole research area. The difference in size could possibly be explained by the differences in activity by females of different sizes, where smaller females were hiding in the traps during the morning. More numerous R. harrisii of the larger size were found outside the Z. marina meaddow, though the differences in sizes between the habitats were non-significant. This studie shows that more research into R. harrisii and its interactions with different organisms, and possible differences in activity, is needed to understand the complex behaviours of R. harrisii. It is also recommended that habitat diversity is taken into consideration in future sampling due to it possibly causing significant differences in the population structure of R. harrisii, which in turn can affect the ecosystem and its foodweb.
