Aihiot, joista vuoat valmistettiin, pidettiin vakio-olosuhteissa ennen puristusmuovausta, jotta vuoat olisivat keskenään mahdollisimman vertailukelpoisia. Puristusmuovauksen parametrit pidettiin myös vakiona kaikkien vuokien valmistuksen ajan. Jokaiselle erilaiselle vuoalle suoritettiin kuusi puristuskoetta, joiden data kerättiin talteen analysointia varten.
The goal of this bachelor’s thesis was to determine the effect of perforation on the compressive strength of paperboard containers. In addition, the effect of adding a heat-sealed lid to the perforated containers was also investigated. In addition to the perforated containers, reference containers were also manufactured to make the results comparable.
In this study containers were manufactured from two PET-coated paperboards of different thicknesses with different perforation patterns on their bottoms. The blanks used to manufacture the containers were kept in standard conditions before press forming to ensure the comparability among the containers. Standard parameters were also used in press forming for all the blanks. For each unique container, six compression tests were performed, and the data was gathered for analyzing.
According to the results of the tests, the effects of perforation are highly dependent on the thickness of the used material. The corners of the containers appear to be the critical part; adding holes to the corners had a considerable effect on the flexibility of the containers. Depending on the thickness of the used material, the holes either increased or decreased the compressive strength of the container.
The behavior of the perforated containers can be explained by the increase in flexibility. This inhibits the formation of permanent damage to the container when compressed. Because of this, the effects of perforation are different depending on the thickness of the material; the thinner material is more flexible to begin with, so adding more flexibility is not always going to help the compressive strength. The heat-sealed lid prevented the containers from spreading to the sides during compression. This increased the compressive strength of containers made from both materials.
