Tiivistelmä
The traditional way of inventory practices has shifted greatly after digitalization and global access to different systems, enabling real-time inventory planning by demand patterns. However, efficient inventory planning is still challenging as companies must balance between flexible capacity and consistent service level to maintain customer satisfaction. To gain competitive advantage in inventory planning, stocking policies must combine market trends and customer knowledge with historical sales data to deliver the most efficient service to customers.
The case company has a global B2B web shop offering a wide variety of spare parts to its online customers. Since its 2017 launch, e-commerce has generated data which has created an opportunity to examine and apply data to different company processes to support data-driven decision-making. However, to this day this e-commerce data has not been widely examined or applied to assist the operational business. As the current processes heavily rely on historical data, some demand estimations have resulted in a low hit-rate for manually classified, intermittent demand stock keeping units. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to identify the case company’s internal processes which could benefit from this data and its predictive variables.
An initial exploratory analysis was conducted to first identify data objects that straight contribute the demand volume of a spare part. These variables were then used with e-commerce applicable data mining and inventory classification methods to form two suggestions for supporting stocking policy processes within the case company. By applying these predicative parameters for decision-making, the processes would no longer rely on sole historical data as there might be a little or even lack of past sales records.
Nonetheless, the suggested applications and further analyses with the existing data would greatly contribute to added value for different internal processes with a predicative dimension. However, as good data is available, the findings suggest that the decision-making should not rely only on this predictive data due to different characteristics of the case company’s spare parts classification and the web shop platform. Perinteiset varastointimallit ovat muutuneet huomattavasti digitalisaation ja eri järjestelmien käytön myötä, mikä on mahdollistanut reaaliaikaisen varastonsuunnittelun kysyntämallien pohjalta. Silti, tehokas varastonsuunnittelu on edelleen haastavaa. Yritysten on samanaikaisesti ylläpidettävä joustavaa varastointikapasiteettia sekä riittävää palvelutasoa asiakastyytyväisyyden ylläpitämiseksi. Kilpailuedun saavuttamiseksi markkinoilla on yrityksen varastointikäytäntöjen yhdistettävä markkinatrendejä, asiakastuntemusta ja historiallisia myyntilukuja tuottaakseen mahdollisimman laadukasta palvelua asiakkaileen.
Case-yrityksellä on globaali B2B varaosaverkkokauppa.
