The objective for this thesis was to shed light to the implementation, use and development of management control systems in the context of innovative small- and medium-sized growth companies. Prior researches have focused mainly in larger corporations, and where the smaller companies have been studied, the theory regarding growth companies remains relatively untouched.
Management control systems (MCS) are important tools for companies of all sizes but for the growth companies these might be more criticial than usual. The growth companies face many internal and external challenges which they need to tackle, not only to thrive, but also to stay in business. Many authors and prior researches have suggested that management control systems are hindering factor for innovation and growth, but this is not necessarily the case. Management control systems might be just what the early-life companies need to manage their business and develop.
The thesis uses the Robert Simons Levers of Control as the framework for the empirical part, because it takes into account a broad array of management control systems. The different parts of MSC are introduced in the theory chapeters as well as the existing literarture regarding strategy, growth and innovation.
The empirical section of this thesis is largly used to open the results from the interviewed companies. First, as Within-Case and secondly as Cross-case results. The reason for this is the aim to give clerarer big picture of the overall situation in each of the companies, and then use the cross-case analysing to point out the differencies and similarities in the companies and in the literature. The interviews seek to answer for the following research questions: What types of MCSs do early-stage firms implent? What are the reasons that lead the company to implement controls? Does the role of innovation in the company affetct the choice and use of these controls? How do the management control systems change during growth?
The results of this thesis point out that the use of management control systems is important for the companies, and the number of the measurements varies a lot even between companies which are the same age and in the same growth phase. The study supports the prior findings (Sandino 2007: Davila et al. 2005; 2007; 2009), but it is noteworthy that the MSCs are very context bind, and the MSC needs to be adapted according to the internal and external situation of the company. Growth seems to be a major factor affeceting the MSC composition and a big factor in developing finer controls. Innovation on the other hand is deemed to be very important for the companies but is not considered an imporant factor when implementing controls, rather it seems that innovation is affecting the choices more indirectly.
