Kasvihuonepäästöjen vähentämisen tavoitteena on yli 40 prosenttia 1990 tasoon verrattuna.
The aim of the National Energy and Climate Strategy for Finland is to increase the use of renewable energy so that its share of final energy consumption will reach at least more than 50% during the 2020s. The target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions is over 40% compared to 1990 levels. The long-term goal is for the Finnish energy system to become carbon-neutral and, as a rule, based on renewable energy sources. To achieve this, Finland needs to increase its decentralized and local energy production significantly.
The aim of the thesis was to research the feasibility and economic efficiency of renewable energy sources in urban, commercial and hybrid buildings. Another aim was to create a computational tool that can effectively compare life-cycle costs and carbon dioxide emissions of different systems. The tool was applied in connection with this work at two sites, one of which is a hybrid building and the other is an educational building. In the hybrid building, the lower floors have retail space and offices, and the upper floors have flats.
The research results provided a wealth of information on the life-cycle and investment costs of energy production options and their environmental impact. Although the cost of investing geothermal and ground cold was the highest in the comparison, the combination proved to be the most cost-effective option in a 25-year life cycle comparison. The combination of geothermal and ground cold reached other systems at cost by about 10 years at the latest. In both studies, the combined system of geothermal and geothermal energy also produced the least carbon dioxide emissions.
According to the study, local energy production can be economically viable compared to district heating. In the examples, district heating alone was the most expensive option com-pared to other systems. Local energy production can increase the use of renewable energy sources and contribute to the set energy targets.
