Tiivistelmä
Vastuullinen sijoittaminen on kasvanut ilmiönä viimeisen kahdenkymmenen vuoden aikana merkittävästi. Myös vastuullisen sijoittamisen sijoitusstrategiota hyödyntävien sijoitusten määrä on kasvanut maailmanlaajuisesti huomattavasti. Aikaisemmat tutkimustulokset vastuullisen sijoittamisen tehokkuudesta ovat olleet ristiriitaisia, eikä akateemisessa kirjallisuudessa ole muodostunut selkeää konsensusta aiheesta.
Tässä tutkielmassa tutkitaan yritysten vastuullisuuden yhteyttä niiden osakkeen suoriutumiseen New Yorkin pörssissä vuosina 2014-2019. Tutkielman empiirinen osuus on suoritettu kvantitatiivisia tutkimusmenetelmiä hyödyntämällä. Yritysten vastuullisuutta mitataan Thomson Reutersin ASSET4-tietokannan ESG-pisteytyksillä. Tutkielmassa rakennetaan korkean ja matalan ESG-pisteytyksen portfoliot, joiden suoriutumista vertaillaan toisiinsa, sekä markkinaportfolion suoriutumiseen. Markkinaportfoliona on käytetty Standard & Poor’s 500 –indeksiä.
Socially responsible investing (SRI) as a phenomenon has grown substantially in the past two decades. Investments that utilize socially responsible investing –strategies have increased significantly globally. Previous research results are contradictory and a clear consensus on the effectiveness of SRI-strategies is yet to be formed in academic literature.
This thesis examines the connection between corporate social responsibility and the performance of companies’ stocks in the New York Stock Exchange in the years 2014-2019. The empirical part of the thesis is conducted using quantitative research methods. The social responsibility of the examined companies is measured by using their ESG-scores. The thesis examines the performance of two portfolios: a portfolio with high ESG-scores and a portfolio with low ESG-scores. The performance of the two portfolios are compared to each other and the market portfolios performance. The market portfolio in this study is the Standard & Poor’s 500 –index. The constructed portfolios and the market portfolio are compared to each other by using the CAPM –model, and three risk adjusted performance measures, that are Jensen’s alpha, Treynor ratio and Sharpe ratio. The risk of the portfolios is examined with beta coefficients and by calculating annualized volatilities for the portfolios.
Results show that socially responsible investing, and especially the best-in-class –method, have been effective investment strategies in the New York Stock Exchange in the years 2014-2019. The portfolio with high ESG-scores is the best choice of the three portfolios according to the risk adjusted performance measures.
