Tiivistelmä
Paperimassan suotautuvuuden mittaaminen laboratorio-olosuhteissa on oleellista massojen jauhautuneisuuden vertailemiseksi.
Kokeellisessa osassa tehtyjen havaintojen pohjalta ehdotettiin ratkaisuksi biomateriaalia sisältävien massaseosten suotautuvuusominaisuuksien karakterisointiin joko teoreettisten SR-lukujen laskemista tehtyjen mittausten pohjalta tai SR-laitteeseen tehtäviä rakenteellisia muutoksia. Drainability measurements of pulps are important when aiming to compare the milling degree of different pulps. One of the most used methods for drainability measurements is the Schopper-Riegler method (SR method), which is based on measuring the pulp freeness. It has been noted, however, that SR method is not capable for measuring the freeness of pulps containing extremely fine material, such as modified biomaterial. The aim of the present work was to develop tools to improve the applicability of the SR method for characterization of pulps containing significant amounts of finely divided material.
In the literature part of this work, the structure of wood fibers was introduced. Fiber-water interactions, as well as most common methods for the pulp drainability measurements in laboratory condition, were described. Numerous SR measurements with pulp mixtures containing different amounts of kraft pulp fibers and modified biomaterial were carried out. Few different biomaterial types were also examined and new possible procedures for measuring SR were suggested.
The results obtained in the experimental part showed that the fraction of modified biomaterial that does not pass through the wire of the SR device during the measurement slows down the drainage rate. Also, SR measurements of the pulp mixtures containing high amounts of modified biomaterial produce results that are hard to differentiate between even though the amount of biomaterial changes substantially. It is possible to reduce the SR numbers artificially by e.g. electrolyte addition, but there is no substantial effect on the reliability of SR number when the percentage of the biomaterial in pulp mixture is high.
Some solutions to improve the SR measurement to be more suited for characterization of pulp suspensions containing biomaterials were introduced. Namely, the best way to use the SR measurement for the drainability analysis of pulp containing finely divided materials is to calculate the theoretical SR values for the fine materials based on the SR measurements made for the pulp mixtures containing different amounts of fine material. It might also be possible to make structural changes to the SR device itself.
