In this thesis, the effect of plate eccentricity on fatigue strength is examined using effective notch stress method. The aim of the thesis is to research how the eccentricity of the joint affects the stress concentration factor, and how the different geometry parameters affect the results obtained.
The effective notch stress method is used as a fatigue strength assessment approach in this work. The work focuses on examining the fatigue that initiates at the toe of the weld, as it is more critical than fatigue from the root side. Based on the obtained results, it can be studied how the plate eccentricity and different geometry parameters affect the fatigue strength of the joint.
Based on the results of the work, it can be concluded that both the increase in the throat thickness and the increase in the thickness of the joint plate have a connection to the stress concentration factor. A higher throat thickness and a thicker joint plate increase the stress concentration factor, thereby reducing the fatigue strength of the joint. The gap between the welds also have an effect on the stress concentration factor. Structures with full penetration welds are more susceptible to fatigue than structures with gap. When the eccentricity of the X-joint is increased, it begins to represent the T-joint when the stress concentration factor becomes constant.
