Tiivistelmä
Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää optimaalisen kryptovaluutta portfolion allokaatiot eri suhdannesykleissä riskikorjatun tuoton indikaattoreilla mitattuna.
Korrelaatiomatriisien tilastollinen merkitsevyys tutkitaan Studentin t-testin avulla.
The purpose of this thesis is to find the allocations of the optimal cryptocurrency portfolio in different market cycles, measured by risk-adjusted return indicators. The research is carried out with four different cryptocurrencies which are Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and Litecoin. The large market cycles are very common in the cryptocurrency markets and often referred to as speculative “bubbles”. The thesis includes three perspectives (the long period, the bull market, and the bear market) optimized for the optimal cryptocurrency portfolios utilizing Sharpe’s rate, Treynor’s rate and Jensen’s alpha.
The thesis is carried out quantitatively and the empirical part consist of a portfolio analysis where the time series data (01.01.2016-15.11.2018) is collected from the cryptocurrency exchange. The research results are analyzed in different market cycles, in addition to optimum portfolio allocations, cross correlation matrices are formed and based on the Markowitz's modern portfolio theory an efficient frontier is created for each time period. The statistical significance of correlation matrices is studied by using Student’s t-test.
The results of the study's empirical research are in line with the previous academic research results. The risk-return ratio of the cryptocurrencies proved to be excellent in the long-term time horizon. The bull market reached extremely high readings as expected whilst the results in the bear market were the opposite. The allocation of the optimal portfolio varied widely during the various market cycles. The correlation between the cryptocurrencies were very strong during the bear market, whereas during the bull market and especially when measuring the whole-time period, the correlation between the cryptocurrencies were moderate.
