Rahastojen aineisto on kerätty kuukausittaisnoteerauksina Thomson Reutersin Datastream -tietokannasta. Ensiksi rahastojen suoriutumista tutkitaan rahastojen keskimääräisten vuosituottojen avulla.
Smart beta -rahastot olivat keskiarvoisesti jokaisella mittarilla heikoiten suoriutunut rahastoluokka. Passiivinen sijoitusstrategia taas oli paras ryhmä jokaisella mittarilla mitattuna keskimääräisessä tarkastelussa. Hallinnointipalkkioilla voimme myös todeta olevan suuri merkitys, sillä keskimääräisten vuosituottojen tarkastelussa ilman kuluja paras rahastoluokka oli aktiiviset rahastot, mutta kulujen jälkeen passiiviset rahastot olivat selvästi parempi rahastoluokka. The aim of this paper is to study how Smart Beta funds have performed compared to actively managed and passive funds in US markets from 2012 to 2016. The study compares returns and risk adjusted returns of six funds from each class. In addition to comparisons between the three classes of funds, they are also compared to Standard Poor’s 500 index.
The data has been gathered as monthly quotations from the Thomson Reuters Datastream database. First, the performance of these funds was studied using their average yearly returns. Yearly returns were calculated as with and without costs to ascertain the effect of expense ratios. After yearly returns, the funds are measured using three different risk adjusted metrics: Sharpe ratio, Treynor ratio, and the Fama & French multi-factor model.
The research results show that Smart Beta funds were not able to outperform active and passive funds. The studied Smart Beta funds had the weakest average performance on all three metrics. The passive investment strategy showed the strongest average performance on all metrics. The research also suggests that expense ratios have a significant impact on a fund’s performance as actively managed funds produced the highest average yearly returns when studied without factoring in costs, but with these costs the passive funds performed clearly stronger.
