Management accounting professionals’ role in an organization and their supporting work in management’s decision making has already been researched for a long time. The topic has been interested both Finnish and international researchers particularly during the past decades. Already in the 1980s and especially in the 1990s in the role of management accounting and in the procedures was recognized a need for a change. The change has been researched widely during this millennium and in the studies has been noticed a common trend for a change in the management accounting and in its role in an organization. It has also been noticed that in the job description of the management accounting professionals, who are commonly known as controllers in Finland, has occurred a change. Or in fact, the role has been claimed to expand so that a modern controller acts as an active and sparring business partner.
In this thesis the reader is first slightly familiarized with the change mentioned before and background behind the change. A bit deeper the reader is made familiar with the modern controller’s different roles and how a controller can work in two different roles, the control role and the support role, and does working in these two roles create conflicts to the controller’s job.
This thesis has been carried out as a case study and its objective is to bring a new perspective to the conversation about the controller’s role. A new perspective is tried to bring especially with the fact that for this thesis there has been interviewed both controllers and the management. In the previous researches it has been very common to only interview controllers for a research about the role change and the role of a modern controller.
Based on this research it can be said that controller’s role has indeed changed and is still in transition. It was interesting to notice how different the controller’s role can be whether the controller works decentralized in a business unit or centralized in the financial management. To the controller’s role and whether he or she takes part in the management decision making affects a lot among other things the controller’s qualities and features and even personality trait.
