The aim of the present study was to make life cycle analysis (LCA) of the industrial mixer “Helmix HF-80” and to perform a detailed analysis of the LCA results in relation to the impact of the LCA on the global warming potential (GWP) and to investigate any potential ways to decrease this impact. The utilization area of the studied mixer includes pulp and paper industry, processing of heavy slurry liquid waste and some other industrial applications. Present work also includes summary and short review on mixing processes, different types of mixing equipment, their differences in design, operating principles and their application, as well as brief overview of mixers used in pulp and paper industry. Methodology of the LCA and the scope of its application were also described in the current study.
The key findings of the present investigation show that the GWP for the whole life cycle of the studied mixer (without a tank, an electromotor and a gearbox) is around 750 000 kg of CO2 equivalent. It has been found that manufacturing, maintenance and decommissioning processes result in production of only 1200 kg of CO2 equivalent, while the major portion 748 000 kg of CO2 equivalent is due to electricity consumption during mixer operation time. Thus, the impact from the mixer’s operation time can be completely eliminated if renewable sources of energy are used. If renewable sources of energy were used for the manufacturing of the studied mixer, the value of GWP would decrease to 1006 kg of CO2 equivalent, which is only 0.13% from its initial value, as the major amount of the GWP value is due to the mixer's material production, meaning that of stainless steel in this case.
