Kokeellisen osuuden tulokset antavat uutta tietoa menetelmien soveltuvuudesta vastaaville laitoksille. This Master’s Thesis was done for the water treatment of Suomen Sokeri in the Laboratory
of Green Chemistry. The goal of the thesis was to develop the precipitation part of
the treatment process by enhancing it with the oxidation method or with an alternative
coagulant. The effects of the tested methods on the organic matter, solid material, and
metal concentration, disinfection inactivity and environmental effects were considered.
Potential pre-oxidation methods (potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide, photochemical
H2O2/UV, photocatalysis TiO2/UV, H2O2/ultrasonic, and oxidation with peracetic
acid) were studied with different concentrations and outputs in a laboratory-scale
with jar-tests. The precipitation was carried out with different coagulants, AlCl3,
Fe2(SO4)3. The quality of the water was analyzed in the different stages of the process.
The effects of the pre-oxidation methods on microbes, viruses and protozoans, algae and
cyanotoxins and possible by-product formation were examined based on literature.
According to the results the potential pre-oxidation techniques were potassium permanganate,
hydrogen peroxide w/w/o ultraviolet radiation or ultrasonically assisted, and
photocatalysis with titaniumoxide. But because for ultrasonic and TiO2/UV, there are
not yet applications at plant scale, the recommended methods are pre-oxidations with
KMnO4 and H2O2(/UV) with follow-up research. Peracetic acid was not recommended
as a pre-oxidation chemical but some promising researches have been done using it as a
disinfection chemical for the drinking water.
The novelty value of the thesis was the literature review in Finnish. The peracetic acid
pre-oxidation has not been studied much earlier. Scientific contribution of the thesis was
the quality of the water after treatments and generalized results the information of preoxidation
methods and their suitability for similar water treatment plants.
