Genre såsom begreppet tillämpas i avhandlingen styr skrivandet.
Since the Swedish immersion program was introduced in Finland in 1987, there has been an active interest in studying the program and its educational outcomes. The majority of writing research studies conducted so far have been product-oriented, focusing on linguistic development and initial literacy skills. There is much less available process-oriented research and research from a systemic functional linguistics (SFL) point of view concerning the writing skills in the second language (L2) of former immersion students in upper grade levels (7–9) comprehensive school education in Swedish immersion. In my thesis I investigate the connection between task prompts and the writing performance of former immersion students in the test of written production for the second national language Swedish in the matriculation examination of the Finnish upper secondary education. The national exams are written after the completion of the compulsory courses in Swedish language arts. The data sample (n=109) for this study were produced by exam candidates in 2012–2014.
In my thesis I combine writing theories from a sociocultural and a cognitive perspective. With this cross-disciplinary approach, my ambition is to display that writing is based on individual cognition as well as on competence acquired through the sociocultural perspective on teaching in language immersion. The aim of my study is to provide insights into the process of L2 writing from two perspectives. Firstly, I study how writing prompts in the exam tests direct the writing from a genre and a cognitive discourse function (CDF) perspective. The CDFs are further identified on either a micro- or a macro-level. Secondly, I examine the writing from an ideational metafunctional perspective, which in my study refers to the experience(s) of the candidates as realised in their texts. An additional interest is to study the interrelationship between writing prompts and exam texts concerning how the candidates are able to discover and make use of possible affordances in writing.
The results show that writing prompts influence the L2 writings of the candidates in several ways. The genre landscape of the exam tests (n=24) mainly consists of analytical genres, where the candidates are challenged to discuss and argue. Nevertheless, when given a choice, the exam candidates in my study prefer to write in a personal genre, and there is a strong tendency towards using narrative verbal actions related to the macro-level (e.g. RECOUNT). Consequently, the L2 writings focus expressive writings, and within these writings relationships and friendships are prominent. The analysis of the CDFs shows that EVALUATE and DISCUSS are the most prominent verbal actions in the writing prompts. The candidates seldom make use of the CDFs related to the micro-level, or verbalized forms of thinking processes in their L2 writings. Additionally, three different envisionments (text worlds) of writing are distinguished in the analysed data. One is a personal envisionment of L2 writing in which the candidates write about their life experiences and personal thoughts. Furthermore, a factual and an analytical envisionment of L2 writing are distinguished in the data. Within the latter, the candidates highlight a topic or discuss a phenomenon.
Advanced literacy across the curriculum during different stages of learning is important to support understanding and content learning in language immersion. The study suggests the importance of scaffolding in L2 writing in educational settings, and in language immersion in particular. In addition, it is important to formulate writing assignments in a way that supports the writers’ thinking processes and guides them further in their writing processes. The study is an important contribution to the field of research in L2 writing where genre and CDFs are combined. By focusing on three genre discourses (a personal, a factual and an analytical discourse) and the use of CDFs, writing in L2 can be scaffolded and different ways of thinking during the writing process can be verbalized.
