Tiivistelmä
Tutkielmani aiheena on sosiaalityön opiskelijoiden ammatti-identiteetin muotoutuminen vieraskentällä. Tarkastelen Tansaniassa ja Mosambikissa opintojensa aikana työskennelleiden sosiaalityön opiskelijoiden ammatti-identiteetin muotoutumista suhteessa heidän kuvauksiinsa ympäristön sosiaalisista ongelmista. Tarkoitukseni on selvittää, miten kehitysmaaolosuhteissa työskenteleminen vaikuttaa opiskelijoiden itsestään muodostamaan käsitykseen tulevina sosiaalityön ammattilaisina.
Tutkielmani perusteella haastateltavien tuottamasta ongelmapuheesta on mahdollista eritellä useita eri ammatti-identiteettejä. He kokevat tärkeäksi kansainvälisten työharjoittelu- ja opiskelijavaihtomahdollisuuksien jatkuvan kehittämisen, sillä nykypäivänä sosiaalityöntekijöiltä vaaditaan entistäkin vahvempaa monikulttuurista osaamista.

My master's thesis examines the formation of social work students professional identities in the international field. I will examine how social work students that worked in Tanzania and Mozambique during their studies formed their professional identities in relation to their descriptions of their environment's social problems. My intention is to find out how working in circumstances typical to developing countries influenced the students' perception of themselves as future social work professionals.
My material consists of the interviews of four social work students. Three of them did their advanced studies traineeship in Tanzania and one of them was an exchange student in Mozambique. During their time in international field each student worked in a social work organization in tasks corresponding to their education. The method of analysis in this thesis is the idea of category analysis that enables a thorough and detailed coding and examination of the material. My research question and design are based in the interpretation of social problems, which is the theoretical framework of my study. My research questions are as follows: How do social work students categorize social problems in interview talks? What kind of professional identities are enabled to the social workers by different social problems?
My thesis shows that several professional identities can be specified from the problem speak produced by the interviewees. This is based both on the diverse nature of working in the international field and the tasks involved in it, and on the students' previous experience. The common feature behind all problem speak is the connection between social problems and poverty. My research shows that working in a foreign culture is a unique experience in terms of professional development. The students developed in a few months in ways that would not likely have been possible in their home country. They feel that international traineeship and student exchange need constant development, because modern social workers need even stronger multicultural competence than before. Also, more and more social workers work abroad in some point of their careers. My thesis shows that work abroad during studies enhances the conception of the global nature of social work and creates understanding of different cultures and social conditions. Therefore, international traineeship and student exchange are especially important in social work.
