Tiivistelmä
Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kuvata terveydenhuoltoalan opiskelijoiden suhtautumista vanhusten hoitotyöhön. Tehtävänä oli tutkia, miten opiskelijat suhtautuvat vanhuksiin, omaan vanhenemiseen, vanhuuteen yhteiskunnassa, vanhusten hoitotyöhön ja vanhustyön koulutukseen. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tuottaa tietoa, jonka avulla vanhustyön koulutusta voidaan kehittää.
Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty itse laaditulla, kirjallisuuteen perustuvalla kyselylomakkeella.
Kohderyhmän muodostivat Pirkanmaan ammattikorkeakoulun sairaanhoitaja- ja terveydenhoitajaopiskelijat. Kyselylomakkeita jaettiin 150, joista vastauksen palautti 140, vastausprosentin ollessa 93.

The purpose of the study was to describe attitudes of health care students towards elder care. The objective was to investigate the attitudes of students towards the elderly, their own personal aging, aging and the society, elder care and education in the field of elder care.
The aim of the study was to generate information that could help in the development of education in elder care. The research material was gathered through a self-formulated questionnaire that was based on literature. The target group consisted of nursing- and public health nursing students in the Pirkanmaa University of Applied sciences.
Altogether 150 questionnaires were distributed, of which 140 were returned, giving an answering percentage of 93. The questionnaire contained 70 closed propositions and 6 open questions. The results were analyzed with a SPSS-program and cross-tabulation as well as a chi-square test were used as research methods for quantitative material. The material is also presented through frequencies and percentages. An open question concerning a description of an elderly person was analyzed with content specification and other questions are presented in the text within the different theme areas as direct quotes. According to the results the attitudes of nursing- and public health nursing students towards the elderly and their own old age were positive, even though their personal aging caused anxiety about loneliness and decreasing of personal autonomy. In the society, the attitude towards the elderly was found to be underestimating which is also apparent in the way elder care is regarded. The students were not interested in elder care. They felt that teaching concerning elder care is partly sufficient in their education, but that there should be more opportunities for specialization in the field and they wished for more innovative teaching methods as well as more professional teachers.
The research results suggest that the attitudes of health care students towards elder care can be influenced through education and training and that co-operation between working life and schools and educational institutions is necessary.
Key words: Health care student, elderly person, elder care
