Tiivistelmä
Tutkielmassani analysoin Tim Burtonin Päätön ratsumies -elokuvan symboliikkaa ja taikuutta käyttäviä naishahmoja sekä niiden yhteydessä elokuvan päähenkilöä Ichabod Cranea. Lähtökohtana on Päättömän ratsumiehen näkeminen film noir -muunnelmana, jonka sosiaalisessa miljöössä vaikuttavat femme fatale -tyyppiset naishahmot.
Asiasanat: elokuva, goottilaisuus, film noir, femme fatale, belle juive, Neitsyt Maria, noituus, wicca, okkultismi, värit, symboliikka.
My thesis discusses the women characters who use magic and the symbolism of Tim Burton’s film Sleepy Hollow. In this context, I also analyze the character of Ichabod Crane, the protagonist of the film. The starting point of the thesis is viewing Sleepy Hollow as a version of film noir the social milieu of which is marked by femme fatale type of women characters. The fatefulness of the women characters is based on their beauty, their use of magic, and the symbolism connected with it. The women characters have to suffer and they are either destroyed or saved because of love. Central themes in Sleepy Hollow, in my view, and in my thesis are the conflicts between one’s psychic, inner world and reality and between reason and magic. These conflicts are connected to the conflicts between the sexes.
I start by connecting Sleepy Hollow to the continuity of Burton’s gothic inspired films and by introducing the genres a combination of which I view the film as. After this, I analyze the use of magic by the women characters of the film, the symbolism connected with it, and the symbolism of the central colours of the film. In addition to analyzing the women characters of the film as types of femme fatale, I analyze them as types of belle juive and, in connection to Catholic and Jewish-Christian tradition, by drawing on the symbolism connected with the Virgin Mary and the views about the woman demon Lilith and Eve, the fallen mother of the human race.
Keywords: film, gothic, film noir, femme fatale, belle juive, Virgin Mary, witchcraft, wicca, occultism, colours, symbolism.
