Tiivistelmä
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia WTO -kriittisten aktivistien vuonna 2001 Tampereen teknillisessä korkeakoulussa pitämää luentoa poliittisena teatterina. The Yes Men -ryhmä kutsuttiin luennoimaan ”Tulevaisuuden kuidut” -konferenssiin, jonne he saapuivat WTO:n nimissä. Tutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää voidaanko Jeesmiesten luentoa pitää poliittisena teatterina ja millainen asema yleisöllä on esityksessä. Tutkielma on tapaustutkimus ja tutkimusmateriaalina on dokumentti The Yes Men 2005, jossa esitellään Tampereen luentoa ja Jeesmiesten toimintaa. Dokumentti ei anna puheenvuoroa katsojalle, joten dokumentin materiaalia on täydennetty haastattelemalla esityksen nähnyttä professori Pertti Nousiaista.
Ennen esityksen tutkimista poliittisena teatterina on tarpeellista pohtia voiko esitystä pitää teatterina. Tutkin luentoa Richard Schechnerin performanssiteorian avulla.
Katsojalla on näissä teorioissa merkittävä asema, koska häneen pyritään vaikuttamaan. Myös Jeesmiesten tarkoituksena on vaikuttaa katsojiin ja saada heidät reagoimaan ironian kautta näkyväksi tehtyihin epäkohtiin. Esitystä voidaan pitää poliittisena teatterina, koska Jeesmiehet ottavat Tampereen esityksessä poliittisesti kantaa ja esityksellä on poliittinen sanoma, vaikka esitys ei onnistukaan synnyttämään kriittistä katsojaa.
Asiasanat: Teatterillisuus, performatiivisuus, eeppinen teatteri, vieraannuttaminen, näkymätön teatteri, kriittinen katsoja, näkyväksi tekeminen.
The purpose of this thesis is to study a lecture given by a critical activist group in Tampere in 2001 as political theatre. A group called The Yes Men were invited to give a lecture in a conference and they arrived pretending to be representatives of the World Trade Organisation. The aim of the thesis is to find out, whether The Yes Men’s lecture can be considered political theatre and what role is given to the audience. The thesis is a case study and the material consists of a document The Yes Men 2005, which presents the lecture in Tampere and the activities of the Yes Men. The audience is not given the floor in the document and therefore the material was completed with an interview of Professor Pertti Nousiainen who was present in the lecture.
Before studying the presentation as political theatre it is imperative to discuss whether the lecture can be considered theatre in the first place. I approach the lecture with Richard Schechner’s performance theory. The presentation has both performative and theatrical features. Yet, the point of departure of the presentation is theatrical, since The Yes Men play a lecture. The performer and the audience share a common space and the Yes Men have roles, costumes and the presentation has a script. Therefore, it fulfils the basic criteria for theatre.
When it has been established that the presentation is theatre, it is considered as political theatre in the light of Bertolt Brecht’s epic theatre and Augusto Boal’s invisible theatre. Spectators have an important role in both, because both theatres aim at making an impact on them. The Yes Men have a similar goal and they try to make the audience react to evils made visible through irony. The lecture represents political theatre, because the Yes Men take a political stand and the presentation has a political message, even though it does not succeed in its goal to give birth to a critical spectator.
Key words: Theatricality, performance, epic theatre, alienation, invisible theatre, critical spectator, making visible.
