ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to describe experience of infertility and peer support during infertility treatments in the Finnish Internet discussion forums. Two samples of materials concentrating on experiences and peer support were selected and analysed by using inductive content analysis. The first material of experiences of infertility was investigated in 2002 and the second material of peer support in 2005. Those who wrote to the discussion forums appeared under pseudonyms and many of them were going through infertility treatments at the same time. The analysis revealed in total 588 different expressions of experience of infertility and peer support. The results of the study are especially needed by the stuff of the infertility clinics but also those working in the public health service and encountering people suffering from infertility.
The experiences of infertility appear in many ways. There is hope, acceptance, and fear, depending on whether the person sees that there could be an end to infertility, there is no end to it, or it will continue to a foreseeable future. Accordingly the feelings that the person is going through range from joyful hope to ultimate despair. Hope is connected with dreams of possible pregnancy and parenthood. Fear that infertility will continue has many sides. There is mistrust that there will ever be an end of the situation, and thus enviness, unpowerness, and bitterness are often experienced. Attitudes towards one’s own infertility and other women’s pregnancies are avoiding and contradictory. Some writers also discuss the possibility to accept that they will remain childless permanently contrary to their will.
The peer support appears as maintaining and strengthening hope in succeeding in the infertility treatment. Support, encouragement, and sympathy given by a peer are especially needed when there are feelings of fear and despair. Peer support is also essentially important for those who confront a negative pregnancy test or miscarriage. Participants in the discussion forums feel that they are equal, they have similar experiences, and feelings of equality and similarity unite them. The writers have clear needs for sense of community and unity which are fulfilled by sharing infertility, the present life situation, and other uniting experiences between them. The virtual community is strengthened by using original and metaphorical language and humor.
Discussions concerning infertility in the Internet can be regarded as an important way to get peer support and this can strengthen empowerment of those suffering from infertility.
Key words: infertility, peer support, experience of infertility
