Keskosen vanhemmuuteen kuuluvat voimakkaat tunteet. Keskosen vanhemmille tulee tarjota mahdollisuus kokea onnistumisen tunteita lapsen hoidossa ja mahdollisuus nauttia vanhemmuudesta.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to study what kind of counselling parents of preterm infant reveive from nursing staff during hospital care. The data were collected from essays written by parents and thematic interviews with parents at the end of hospital care. Eight mothers and three fathers participated. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis.
According to the study parenthood of preterm infant developed in counselling. Counselling gave parents an opportunity to participate in the care of the infant, helped parents to cope and kept them up-to-date on the condition of the infant.
Individuality and a family-centred approach to counselling parents should be fostered, likewise co-operation between parents and nursing staff in the interests of better information transfer and more chances for the parents to decide about the care of the infant.
Parents expected the nursing staff to be patient, friendly, encouraging and also to provide concrete support. Being the parent of a preterm infant aroused strong feelings. The parent of preterm infants should be offered the opportunity to feel they are successful in caring for the child and to enjoy being parents.
Keywords: counselling, premature infant, parents
