The database contains geographic names collected through fieldwork since 1989, as well as some older material, the number of records being 57 600. It also includes the Names Archive established in 1989. The latter contains geographic names collected partly through field work and partly through onomastics research. The encoded material of the Names Archive consists of 86 100 records on different geographic names.

Paikannimitietokanta sisältää paikannimien kenttäkeruuaineistot vuodesta 1989 ja jonkin verran myös vanhempaa aineistoa, yhteensä 57 600 tietuetta. Lisäksi mukana on vuonna 1990 perustetun, osin kenttäkeruuseen ja osin nimistöntutkimustietoon pohjautuvan Paikannimipankin koodattu nimiaineisto, 86 100 paikannimitietuetta.
