Challenges facing Taiwan, the Asian Tiger

Abstract: Taiwan emerged as an Asian Tiger from being a poor country with limited resources in the 1950s to become a major technology hub in the 2000s. Today the newly elected President Tsai Ing-wen faces a number of challenges. These include the instability of political relations with the People’s Republic of China and the insufficient capacity of Taiwanese industries to innovate. This case aims to help students understand the key factors behind Taiwan’s economic miracle and make them think about possible solutions to tackle the current challenges.
