Abstract
Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) are wireless solutions designed mainly for Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. However, the scalability of these networks remains a significant concern, especially when faced with stricter reliability requirements or the need to accommodate a massive number of devices. Additionally, the challenge lies in developing lightweight protocols that can effectively improve the performance of IoT devices while minimizing energy consumption and cost.
In this thesis, our objective is to enhance the reliability of LPWANs through the utilization of message replication and non-orthogonal techniques. The use of replication in these scenarios is particularly advantageous as it requires minimal processing on the devices themselves. To achieve this, we have designed a novel hybrid coded message replication scheme that combines simple repetition with a previously proposed coded replication method in the literature. Furthermore, we have explored a scenario involving gateways equipped with successive interference cancellation (SIC) capabilities to address multiple transmission collisions. Additionally, we have proposed a non-orthogonal replication scheme, where devices transmit multiple superposed signals in the power domain, enabling a gateway to decode them using SIC.
To assess the performance of our schemes, we have employed a stochastic geometry model for analytical evaluation and conducted Monte Carlo simulations for validation. Our evaluation focuses on key metrics such as outage and success probabilities, energy consumption, and coverage. By employing these techniques and evaluating them rigorously, we aim to contribute to the advancement of LPWANs, making them more reliable, energy-efficient, and capable of supporting a wide range of IoT applications.
Lisäksi on tutkittu skenaariota, jossa yhdyskäytävät kykenevät peräkkäiseen häiriönpoistoon (SIC) samanaikaisten lähetysten törmäysten selvittämiseksi.
