Tarkoituksena on tutkia, miten maahanmuuttajataustaiset tytöt kuvaavat Underground-nuorisotilaa sosiaalisena tilana ja mitä merkityksiä he sille antavat.
(Underground).
(Underground).
ABSTRACT: ”It is our home” Immigrant background girls’ : view of Underground youth center’s like space
The topic of this thesis is spatiality in youth centers and Underground youth center as a social space from the perspective of girls with immigrant background. The purpose of the research is how girls with immigrant background describe Underground as a social space and what kind of meanings they give to the space.
The youth center Underground is located in South Sweden, in Råslätt, which is one of Jönköping's suburbs. It consisting of 60 ethnicities and several religious groups. There has been successful work with integration, girls’ free time, network building etc. through Underground. In every program the goal is that young people get support from adults in a positive way and that free time activities are developed. In the past year, over 50% of the youth have been girls, which is quite unique in this neighborhoods. (Underground).
Leaders invested a lot in girls in different ways in the youth center. They constantly strove to improve the environment and atmosphere, they listen to the girls' suggestions and try new things for them. In society and in the family there is often a lower priority on girls. That is why leaders are doing the opposite in Underground. (Underground).
As a basis for my analysis I have used Kiilakoski’s and others (2011, 68) model of youth centers’ factors which break the looseness of the space. I created themes and then I put them into practice with a theoretical analysis. Underground’s factors which increase the looseness of the space are fun of place’s activities and atmosphere, activities and girls’ will to lead activities to other young people, the community of youth center and neighborhood, good and well-known leaders of youth center and girls feel that it is safe place. Underground’s factors which break the looseness of the social space are promotion forms and rules, the girl set culture of the place’s, friends and community and youth centers’ location. There are more factors which increase the looseness of the space than factors which break the looseness of the space in Underground. I believe that this research’s results can be useful in Finland, because also here one should let girls with immigrant background be involved in planning their activities and leading and their hopes should be listened to better.
