Tutkimusaineisto analysoitiin tilastollisin menetelmin SPSS for Windows 20.0 tilasto-ohjelmalla.
Social support network and support received from support network to a parent who has experienced the death of a child
The purpose of the study was to describe the social support network of the parents who have experienced their child´s death, the support they received from the network and other factors connected with this. In addition, the purpose of the study was to describe the connection between participation in grief groups and the social support network and the amount of support received from the support network. The aim was to produce information about the width of the social support network of the parent who has experienced a child´s death, about the amount of the received support and about the differences in support in order to further develop care work and to develop the support to the parents.
The Data consisted of 82 fathers and 83 mothers, who had experienced a death of a child. The data were collected with a questionnaire that included background information from fathers and mothers as well as information about social support network and amount of support received. The Data was analyced statistically using the SPSS for Windows 20.0 software. The statistical tests used were chi-square test, independent samples T-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Spearman´s correlation coefficient.
According to the study results, both the fathers´ and the mothers´ social support network most generally includes the family members, the spouse and the grandparents. The spouse´s parents are part of the fathers´ support network more often than that of the mothers. The mothers´ support network consisted of the parents with the same experience and of friends more often than that of the fathers. Instead, the fathers´ support network includes colleagues more often than that of the mothers. The amount of the support received from the support network members varied. The fathers received most support from their spouses whereas the mothers received most support from their friends. The fathers received more support from the spouse´s parents than the mothers did. Of the background variables, basic education, vocational education, civil state, the child´s gender, the parents´ age, the number of other children, the experienced health condition, the child´s age at the time of the death, pregnancy weeks and time elapsed from the child´s death had an influence on the received support from a support network member either to the father or the mother or to them both. The share of the parents with the same experience and the share of friends increased in the social support network for those who had participated in grief groups. Those who had participated in grief groups received more support from the parents with the same experience and from congregation employees.
The social support network of the fathers and of the mothers differed from each other. Both the fathers and the mothers received rather little support from some parts of the support network. Different members of the support network gave different amounts of support to the fathers and the mothers. Background variables influenced on the amount of support the fathers and the mothers received from one or several support network members. Participation in grief groups had connection with the parents´ social support network and with the support received from the support network. The support network and the amount of support received from the network differed from each other for the fathers and mothers who had participated in grief groups.
