Tiivistelmä
Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma koostuu kahdesta osasta. Ensimmäisenä osana on tieteellinen artikkeli: Työterveyshoitaja työikäisten mielenterveyden edistäjänä (kirjoittajat: Nieminen T, Paavilainen E, Nikki L ja Kylmä J), joka on lähetetty arvioitavaksi. Tutkielman toisena osana on täydentävä osa, jossa kuvataan työterveyshoitajien käsityksiä mielenterveyden käsitteestä.
Tutkimus on osa laajempaa mielenterveyden edistämisen hanketta (Kylmä & Nikkonen 2008), jossa tutkitaan mielenterveyden edistämistä eri konteksteissa. Tarkoituksena on kirjoittaa toinen tieteellinen artikkeli tutkimusaineistosta.
Pohdintaosassa on kuvattu mielenterveyden käsitettä työterveyshoitajien määrittelemänä. Työterveyshoitajien mukaan mielenterveyden käsite on hyvin moniulotteinen ja siihen liittyy vahvasti kokonaisvaltainen hyvinvoinnin olemus. Tulosten mukaan mielenterveys on hyvin laaja käsite, joka koostuu moninaisista ulottuvuuksista, ihmiseen itseensä suuntautuvista myönteisistä ulottuvuuksista, toisiin ihmisiin suuntautuvista myönteisistä ulottuvuuksista sekä työhön suuntautuvista myönteisistä ulottuvuuksista.
Promoting employees’ mental health in occupational health care : the occupational health nurses’ perceptions on the mental health of the working-age people
This Master´s thesis consists of two parts. The first part is a scientific article: The occupational health nurse as a promoter of the employees’ mental health (Nieminen T, Paavilainen E, Nikki L & Kylmä J) which has been sent for publication consideration. The second part of the thesis is a complementary part which describes the occupational health nurses’ perceptions on the concept of mental health.
The study is part of a more extensive mental health promotion project (Kylmä & Nikkonen 2008) which explores mental health promotion in different contexts. The purpose of this study was to describe the employees’ mental health promotion in the occupational health services from the occupational health nurse’s perspective. More specifically, this study strived to describe what mental health is according to the occupational health nurses, and how the occupational health nurses work in order to promote their clients' mental health. The data was collected through open interviews from occupational nurses working in either public or private health care organizations. A total of 16 occupational health nurses participated in the study. The data was collected from April to June in 2013, and it was analyzed by inductive content analysis. Part of the interview material has been used for this particular study. However, the scientific research material is meant to be used for writing another research article.
In the second part of the Master’s thesis, which is a discussion section, the concept of mental health is described as it is defined by the occupational health nurses. According to the occupational health nurses, the concept of mental health is very complex, and comprehensive well-being is strongly associated with it. According to the results, the mental health concept is very broad, consisting of multi-faceted dimensions; one’s positive self-oriented dimensions, one’s positive dimensions directed at other people, and the positive work-oriented dimensions.
