The hopes of the future of the adolescents and their connection to selfrated health
Adolescents´ images and hopes of the future affect their forthcoming life. Therefore it is
important to explore issues connected to them. The aim of this study was to examine, what
kind of hopes of the future 12–18-year-old adolescents had. The purpose of this study was
also to focus on the differences of adolescents´ age and gender. The study´s important
perspective was also to assess the associations of adolescents´ self-rated health and their
hopes of the future. The study used the data of the nationwide 2009 Adolescent Health and
Lifestyle Survey. 5516 adolescents responded (56 %). The data on 12-, 14-, 16- and 18-
year-old adolescents is nationally representative and it was collected through mail. The offset
of the study´s methods were qualitative using content analysis. Also statistical methods
were used.
The results showed that the work related hopes (58 %) were reported the most often. The
following hopes were issues related to the family (47 %), adolescents´ own health (34 %)
and education (24 %). The less often reported hopes were related to the material things and
extrinsic goals, such as getting rich (4 %) or fame and appearance (1 %). Also topics related
to the leisure activities (4 %), travelling (3 %) and wellbeing of the society (3 %) were mentioned
quite rarely. The hopes of the future of the adolescents focused mainly on issues
which link adolescent to the society.
The girls and boys hoped for the future matters fairly uniformly related to the work and own
home or becoming independent. The differences between sexes were seen so that the
hopes of the girls focused more often to the matters related to family, friendship, education
and travelling and the boys hoped more the matters related to owning, success, getting rich
or leisure activities. In a comparison between ages the youngest hoped for the points related
to the friendship, matter, owning or getting rich whereas the answers of the older adolescents
focused on more profound factors such as becoming independent or education.
The results also showed that those adolescents who rated their health worse mentioned
less often the hopes of the future connected to the health or work. These adolescents also
reported more often the hopes connected to extrinsic goals in comparison to those who
rated their health better. These results may be alarming relative to the wellbeing of future as
for those adolescents who rated their health worse.
