Tiivistelmä
Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan lasten kokemuksia lastensuojelun avohuollon asiakkuudesta.
ENGLISH SUMMARY
“It would be doing worse without child welfare service” : children’s experiences about customership of child welfare services
This research focuses on children’s experiences about being a customer in child welfare services.
Child welfare’s community care support has been studied very little and especially knowledge
about experiences is a part of lesser studies. This research focuses mainly on experiences that the
children have had, which are valuable and less studied focus.
The material collected for this research is interviews of nine children that have been customers in
child welfare services. Children were aged from 8- to 13-years. Interviewed children were collected
through children’s own social workers or family workers, who were in constant contact with the
families. All of the interviews were made in the children’s own homes and by their means so that
there was room for their own narration.
In a science philosophy starting point of this research is phenomenological and hermeneutic, which means that it stresses out experiences and narrations in a way that they must be and it has been analyzed in the means of theme analysis. Using themes the interviews have been sorted based on the experiences children have had and the interpretations that have been made according to the experiences. Composing the research there has been also strait data extracts from the experiences of the children to deepen the analysis and to awoke readers interest and own thoughts.
The children’s experiences about being a customer in chid welfare services seem mainly positive. The factors influencing the experiences of the children are the general image of child welfare services that the child has, the experience of own social worker and the own activity concerning being a customer in the child welfare services. The experiences about social workers are very variable and social workers remain distant to children. Family workers who are in constant contact with the family are experienced remarkable, and through them children’s participation grows stronger. Children’s experiences about actions against their will, as emergency placement, weaken their trust to social workers and child welfare services. Children’s experiences about the usefulness of community care support vary in my research. One third of the children don’t seem to see any change or they don’t know how to describe it. Community care support seems useful for the children themselves or their parents according to the rest of the interviewed children. Community care support actions have helped in concrete things that influence children’s daily life. Children produce a lot of qualities that they seem to connect with a good social worker. These qualities affiliate the social workers persona, the way he works and the way children can affect it. Especially children hope about participation in customership, meeting with the social worker and the importance of gaining truthful information from the social worker. My study confirms the need for advance in the child focused child welfare services.
