Erityisesti olen kiinnostunut ikääntymisen näkymisestä isovanhempien sijaisvanhemmuudessa, kun he kasvattavat omia lapsenlapsiaan.
Grandparents as family carers : “We were mainly just wondering about the age.”
The subject of this thesis is grandparents who act as family carers to their own grandchildren. I am especially interested in how the grandparents’ aging can be seen in foster care as they are raising their own grandchildren. In addition, I have studied what kinds of forms of support have been of-fered to grandparents or what kinds of forms of support the grandparents would have wished to re-ceive for supporting their parenthood.
Placing children with their grandparents is often considered in child protection when a foster care location has to be found for a child. The suitability of grandparents is evaluated from different per-spectives, among which aging and challenges brought forth by it are matters that come up easily. Social workers making the assessment do not, however, necessarily have information on how essen-tial the matter in question is and what kind of weight should be placed on aging.
I have collected the material in cooperation with the child protection development unit of Satakunta. This development unit has information on the area’s family carers as well as grandparents with whom a grandchild has been placed. The material consists of the interviews of six grandparents, and I have analysed it with the help of content analysis. I have studied parenthood and aging with the help of a role map of parenthood that defines and structures the tasks of different roles of parenthood. The Family Carer Act, on the other hand, sets different forms of support for family carers. I studied how these forms of support have been realized for grandparents and I clarified if some other forms of support come up.
The results show that the aging of grandparents begins to show in foster care especially when the grandchild starts to become independent. The aging of grandparents and the limited scope of their resources begin to be visible in setting limits and understanding the different needs of the young. However, along with aging, the grandparents have gained experiences and patience that assist in the parenting task.
According to the results, the grandparents did not receive much support. In the results, the unaware-ness of the grandparents regarding different form of support as well as how they would be realized were emphasized. According to the interviews, the grandparents had not discussed support possi-bilities with the authorities. The grandparents’ aging and limited scope of resources may also have had an effect on the fact that they did not find things out themselves. Cooperation with the authori-ties also seemed weak according to the material, and the authorities were experienced as busy. The risk is that grandparents may wish to cope with matters and solve them inside the child’s family. The authorities are easily given a better picture than it is in reality. The authorities should, therefore, be actively involved and take care that the grandparents have information on different forms of sup-port. In this way, it is also possible to deal with possible problems immediately. Different kind of support can be provided for challenges brought forth by aging, and problems can be prevented with good cooperation.
