Aineisto analysoitiin tilastollisesti SPSS 17 tilasto-ohjelmalla.
Parents’ involvement in children’s school attendance and the social relationships at school
The purpose of this study was to describe parents’ involvement in children’s school attendance and
the social relationships of children at elementary school and the connection between parents’
involvement and social relationships of children.
This study was a quantitative descriptive study and it is part of a larger research project Health
promotion of school children and their families in School of Health Sciences (nursing science),
Tampere University. Two primary schools in western Finland took part in the survey. The data was
gathered in the class room setting by questionnaires from four 4th and four 5th in fall 2007. The
amount of the respondents was 190 and the response rate was 76%.
The data was analyzed statistically using SPSS 17 program. Four sum variables were created. Two
of the sum variables described parents’ involvement in children’s school attendance and the other
two described the relationships in the classroom. The sum variables describing the relationships in
the classroom were divided into two aspects: relationships between the pupils and pupil-teacher
relationships. The internal consistency of the sum variables were measured by Cronbach Alpha and
the coefficients ranged from 0,66-0,83. The tests chosen to examine the connections between the
variables were based on the measurement scale and the distribution of the variables. Because the
distributions were not normal statistical methods used were Chi-Square Test, Kruskall Wallis test,
Mann Whitney U-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test and Spearman Correlation coefficient.
The findings of the study showed that the better parents’ involvement in children’s school
attendance was the better were relationships in the classroom. The study also revealed that those
children who had better relationship with other pupils were not bullied. The study did not find any
association between social relationships with children and being a bully.
The conclusion is that both mother’s and father’s active participation to children’s school
attendance were positively connected to the social relationships that children had at school. In the
future it would be important to study the cooperation between school and the parents in more
detailed.
