Tutkimukseni viitekehys on hermeneuttis-fenomenologinen eli olen tutkinut nuorten kokemuksia, miten he asiat muistavat suhteessa omaan todellisuuteensa. Aineiston analyysi on tehty sisällönanalyysin keinoin.
"It's in the behavior - how you treat other people" : adolescent in after-care reminisce the ways they were treated and addressed by the employees of child welfare institutions
In my thesis I am interested in the ways of how the employees of child welfare institutions have treated and addressed the youth, which have been taking into care. The thought behind the research design is that the way the employees in child welfare institutions talk and treat the children who have been taking into care can have a significant meaning to those children, how they see themselves and their lives.
My study is based on a methodology of a qualitative case study. I interviewed five adolescent in a municipal after-care. At my request they reminisced their time in foster care in child welfare institutions. The method I used in the interviews was thematic. The frame of reference of my study is hermeneutic-phenomenological. That is that I have studied the adolescent s experiences, how they remember it related to their reality. To analyze my study I have used content analysis. To perceive the reality I have used terms of identity, stigmatized identity and taking someone into care. The adolescent in after-care, which I interviewed, were in a better place in their lives than the average adolescent in after-care at least according to national studies. Three of them were studying in upper secondary education institutions. One of them was at a maternity leave at the time of the interview, but she was about to continue her studies after her maternity leave. One of them was in a process to be recruited.
These interviews indicated that to the child, who has been taking into care, the employee of a child welfare institution may represent of an adult to talk to, who listens to and who supports the child. This kind of safe grownup has been pointed out in studies to be significant to support the development of a child s identity. To most of the adolescent I interviewed this kind of supportive relationship was enabled. On the other hand as a negative result, it could be seen, that
