Tiivistelmä
Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena oli tarkastella autismikirjon diagnoosin saaneiden kouluikäisten informaatiokäyttäytymistä ja -käytäntöjä heidän läheistensä käsitysten valossa. Tarkastelun keskiöön nostettiin kohderyhmän arkielämän informaatiokäytännöistä kaksi keskeistä projektia: koulunkäynti ja autismikirjo. Käsityksiä tarkasteltiin suhteessa kouluikäisten tiedontarpeisiin, tiedonlähteisiin, tiedonhankintakanaviin ja tiedon jakamiseen. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin tiedonhankinnan haasteita ja tiedosta saatua tukea. Aihepiiriä on käsitelty aikaisemmassa tutkimuksessa, mutta usein hyvin erilaisista näkökulmista. Aiheen tutkiminen oli tärkeää.
Tutkimus toteutettiin pilottitutkimuksena.
Tulosten yleistettävyyden parantamiseksi on syytä tehdä jatkotutkimusta. This master’s thesis aimed at examining information behaviour and practices of school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the light of the perceptions of the nearby. From the everyday information practices, two central everyday projects, studying and autism spectrum disorder, were taken under examination. The perceptions were examined in relation with information needs, information sources, information channels and information sharing of the school-aged children. Also the challenges with obtaining needed information and the help gained when using information were examined. The topic has been examined in previous studies, but often from slightly different viewpoints. It was important to study the subject.
The study was carried out as a pilot study, and the data were collected in early 2019 with a survey distributed by Autism Finland through its web-site. Because only 14 responders had completed the survey, the data were analysed qualitatively by using theory-based content analysis. The research ethical issues were taken into account accurately during the pilot study.
The results indicate two often experienced information needs in the everyday projects: doing schoolwork from the viewpoint of studying, and peer experiences from the viewpoint of autism spectrum disorder. In the light of the perceptions of the nearby, there are gaps in autism awareness, and the co-operation with the professionals is not always fully operational. These perceptions are convergent along the lines with research literature: Encountering a school-aged child with special needs, it is important to take into account the needs, and to know the child. The results are partly supported by previous studies. In the light of the perceptions of the nearby, the information on the autism spectrum disorder is available, but searching for the relevant information may be challenging due to the diversity of the diagnosis. The availability of rehabilitation varies. The role of digital information sources as well as persons as information sources is emphasised. From the two projects, autism spectrum disorder appears to be more information intensive.
Due to the low amount of the data, and due to the own perceptions expressed by the nearby, the results can not be widely generalised. For the improvement to the generalisation, additional research on the subject is recommended.
