In the production of cement, which is the main component of concrete production, the process generates about 5% of the global carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, bioproduct and pulp mills produce signi_cant quantities of soda ash and bio-ash, which is still largely unused. In this paper we will introduce our study related to improving the environmental friendliness of concrete used in construction by utilizing pulp mill waste while its long-term durability and strength and porosity properties meet the goals set for construction. The project `sustainable bioresidual concrete' is on-going and only preliminary numerical results with measurements are presented here.

Bifunctional coordination polymers as efficient catalysts for carbon dioxide conversion
Arunachalam, Rajendran; Chinnaraja, Eswaran; Valkonen, Arto; Rissanen, Kari; Subramanian, Palani S. (John Wiley & Sons, 2019)The multidentate ligand H2L upon complexation with Zn (II) and Cd (II) provide a one‐dimensional polymeric networks. These coordination polymers (CPs) CP‐1 and CP‐2 containing Zn (II) and Cd (II) metals respectively are ... -
Side‐on Coordination in Isostructural Nitrous Oxide and Carbon Dioxide Complexes of Nickel
Puerta Lombardi, Braulio Michele; Gendy, Chris; Gelfand, Benjamin S.; Bernard, Guy M.; Wasylishen, Roderick E.; Tuononen, Heikki M.; Roesler, Roland (Wiley-VCH Verlag, 2021)A nickel complex incorporating an N2O ligand with a rare η2‐N,N’‐coordination mode was isolated and characterized by X‐ray crystallography, as well as by IR and solid‐state NMR augmented by 15N‐labeling experiments. The ... -
The influence of lipid content and taxonomic affiliation on methane and carbon dioxide production from phytoplankton biomass in lake sediment
Hiltunen, Minna; Nykänen, Hannu; Syväranta, Jari (John Wiley & Sons, 2021)The greenhouse gases methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are end products of microbial anaerobic degradation of organic matter (OM) in lake sediments. Although previous research has shown that phytoplankton lipid content ... -
N-Heteroaryl Carbamates from Carbon Dioxide via Chemoselective Superbase Catalysis : Substrate Scope and Mechanistic Investigation
Mannisto, Jere K.; Pavlovic, Ljiljana; Heikkinen, Johannes; Tiainen, Tony; Sahari, Aleksi; Maier, Norbert M.; Rissanen, Kari; Nieger, Martin; Hopmann, Kathrin H.; Repo, Timo (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2023)We report a mild superbase-catalyzed and nitrogen-selective carboxylation of N-heteroaryls, with subsequent alkylation enabling the synthesis of drug-like O-alkyl carbamates in good yields (av. 86%). Our findings suggest ... -
Effect of atomic layer deposited zinc promoter on the activity of copper-on-zirconia catalysts in the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol

(Elsevier, 2023)The development of active catalysts for carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation to methanol is intimately related to the creation of effective metal-oxide interfaces. In this work, we investigated how the order of addition of ...
