Neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay of nuclei is a process that requires the
neutrino to be a massive Majorana particle and thus cannot proceed in the standard model of
electro-weak interactions. Recent results of the neutrino-oscillation experiments have produced
accurate information on the mixing of neutrinos and their squared mass differences. The
0νββ decay takes place in atomic nuclei where it can be observed, at least in principle, by
underground neutrino experiments. The information about the weak-interaction observables,
like the neutrino mass, has to be filtered from the data through the nuclear matrix elements
(NMEs). In this article recent work of the Jyv¨askyl¨a group on the NMEs related to double
beta decays is reviewed. This work concerns (1) the relevance to neutrinoless double beta decay
of occupancies of single-particle orbitals close to the Fermi surface and (2) an example of the
resonant neutrinoless double electron-capture decay of an atomic nucleus.

Improved calculations of β decay backgrounds to new physics in liquid xenon detectors
Haselschwardt, S. J.; Kostensalo, J.; Mougeot, X.; Suhonen, J. (American Physical Society (APS), 2020)We present high-precision theoretical predictions for the electron energy spectra for the ground-state to ground-state β decays of 214Pb, 212Pb, and 85Kr most relevant to the background of liquid xenon dark matter detectors. ... -
Muon-electron lepton-flavor-violating transitions : Shell-model calculations of transitions in 27Al
Kostensalo, Joel; Suhonen, Jouni; Civitarese, O. (American Physical Society, 2018)In this paper we present the results of large-scale shell-model calculations of muon-to-electron lepton-flavorviolating transitions for the case of the target nucleus 27Al. We extend the previous shell-model calculations, done ... -
Analysis of light neutrino exchange and short-range mechanisms in 0νββ decay
Deppisch, Frank F.; Graf, Lukas; Iachello, Francesco; Kotila, Jenni (American Physical Society (APS), 2020)Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) is a crucial test for lepton number violation. Observation of this process would have fundamental implications for neutrino physics, theories beyond the Standard Model and cosmology. ... -
Correlating Schiff Moments in the Light Actinides with Octupole Moments
Dobaczewski, Jacek; Engel, Jonathan; Kortelainen, Markus; Becker, Pierre (American Physical Society, 2018)To explore the nature of collective modes in weakly bound nuclei, we have investigated deformation effects and surface flow patterns of isovector dipole modes in a shape-coexisting nucleus, 40Mg. The calculations were ... -
Theoretical investigation of the double-beta processes in 96Ru
Suhonen, Jouni (American Physical Society, 2012)The two-neutrino (2ν2β) and neutrinoless (0ν2β) double-β decays of 96Ru are investigated for the transitions to the ground state, 0+ gs, and 0+ and 2+ excited states in 96Mo by using the quasiparticle random-phase ...
